Think you're an XD38 type? What have you had for good jobs that last?

Wish I could help, but I've evedently been working all the *wrong* ones. I've come pretty close to giving up on finding a job to fit into.

I hear you. I'm now deciding between a PhD in Education, Technology and Communications at NYU and new media journalism.

I'd say don't give up though! I have had great success with a book called "Zen and the Art of Making a Living" by Boldt i think.

We've got a copy of that, actually, and it's pretty good. I havn't really dived into it but we've been skimming around.

Do you *have* to choose between the majors? I suppose <grin>.

Haven't found one yet, but I know it's in education or psychology or both. :)

tried being a personal banker.. i haven't recovered from that yet. my boss told me i was spending too much time with little old ladies, explaining things too much, helping people too much, etc. I resigned.

I couldn't bear the ineffectuality of the public education system. I do not play political games, nor do i have the patience for never-ending diplomacy among bureaucratic, pay-check-dependent morons who care little for the students and teachers who are trapped in the system. I tried public and private schools as well as rural and urban schools. It's pretty much a matter of chosing your scandal and where it is that you don't mind suffering in silence. Education: kind of like the voting booth where it's a matter of choosing from a limited selection of differing shades of the same insidious, but smiling evil.

i'm in grad school, hoping i have the discipline to earn a PhD in literature so I can teach in a place where students have at least some rights.

    :) cheers

Excellent points about pubic education, where I am for at least the next couple of weeks. I've met those that like it and make peace with it, but they admit the bullshit factor is very high and they just minimize it.

      Good luck with the doctorate.

"i was spending too much time with little old ladies, explaining things too much, helping people too much, etc..."

The key to this dilemma is to find a company that encourages this kind of thing.

I have been lucky in working for 3 such companies in the past 10 years. Currently I do customer service and tech support for a small wireless ISP in North Texas. Because we are small, we can't use economy of scale to bring our prices down; therefore, we attempt to excel in personal service for the subscribers.

Besides, I just believe in it. Fortunately, they hired me to start the customer service section, so I got to make the rules :)

Yes, it is possible to find corporate cultures that allow this kind of thing without requiring you to take a vow of poverty. May take some digging, but they're out there.
